Security Updates January 2011

By Eriq on January 12, 2011

On Tuesday, January 11, Microsoft released their monthly release of security updates. The two updates released may seem like a small number, but one of the updates is critical. Our preferred go-to source for vulnerability assessment, the Internet Storm Center, has released their own assessment of the patches at http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=10252.

As always, we encourage everyone to install updates from Microsoft when the yellow shield appears in the taskbar of your Windows-based computer. You can also manually check for updates from Microsoft at any time by going to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate and following the instructions there.

Last Thursday, November 4, 2010, Adobe released a critical update for Flash on all supported platforms (http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-26.html). Adobe recommends all Flash installs be updated to address the vulnerabilities identified in the security update. If you are prompted to update flash the next time you log in to your computer, EON Consulting recommends that you go ahead and install the update. If you are not prompted to update, or you want to manually install the update yourself, use the links at the bottom of the linked page at Adobe to download and run the updater for your platform.

Cross-platform Trojan Active in the Wild

By Eriq on November 2, 2010 No Comments

A relatively new cross-platform Trojan is making its way around the Internet, causing problems for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems. The Trojan is based on Java code, which is cross-platform by design, and is likely just the beginning of this type of threat for systems around the world. This particular threat, called Koobface, is not a significant risk to systems because of problems within the Trojan code and a relatively small spread reported thus far (although the threat is being spread via Facebook and Twitter). More detail about the Koobface Trojan, specifically focused on how it impact Macintosh systems, can be found in a post at the Mac Security blog hosted by Intego (http://blog.intego.com/2010/10/29/more-information-about-the-koobface-trojan-horse-for-mac/). The Sophos Security blog also contains information about the Trojan, including some screenshots showing how the Trojan attempts to work, so you can know what to look for if you think you might encounter this attack (http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2010/10/28/cross-platform-worm-targets-facebook-users/).

As always, be careful what you click on out there on the Internet!
